Campaigns: Safe Food

In February 2005, at the same time as the national Board of Directors committed to making oppostion to Deep Integration with United States the overarching framework for all of the political work of the Council of Canadians, it made the difficult decision to gradually phase out our Genetically Engineered Food Campaign by June 2007. The renewed emphasis on the Public Health Care core campaign this year has reinforced the need for the GE phase-out.

The CoC, however, will provide support to chapters for their local work on GE and other Food Security and Sovereignty issues. Our chapter can appeal for such support if we plan a campaign. There is still CoC involvement in the following:

  1. co-sponsoring a meeting of a new, national cross-organizational GE Network, and trying to arrange Foundation money for it
  2. membership in Beyond Factory Farming organization
  3. publications linking food sovereignty and deep integration issues
  4. previous support to chapters for the Ban Terminator Campaign
