The Peterborough - Kawarthas Chapter of The Council of Canadians
The Chapter's First Year – 2001
Prior to the formation of the Peterborough-Kawarthas chapter, many local citizens belonged to the Council of Canadians and campaigned against the MAI (Multilateral Agreement on Investment); for seniors' public pensions; against bank mergers; to rid Bovine Growth Hormone; for Medicare; to eliminate child poverty; to prevent water from becoming a commodity; in opposition to the WTO (World Trade Organization), NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and corporate globalization; for mandatory labelling of any product with genetically engineered ingredients; and for science for the public good.
January
- recruited local activists for a chapter steering committee
February
- Feburary 6th, met with Ontario Regional Organizer, Brent Patterson, to officially set up a chapter
April
- Spring Canadian Perspectives listed us as a chapter with Roy Brady as contact person
- April 19-22, several members travelled to Quebec City to protest against the Quebec Summit and to participate in the People's Summit against the FTAA (Free Trade of the Americas)
- April 23, upon return, an emergency meeting with the Peterborough Examiner in attendance was called to help four arrested Peterborough participants, which included one of our members and a teenage son of another member. Also, we challenged the overreaction of the Quebec police at the Summit

- May 16, at the founding meeting of our chapter, Tony Clarke, CoC board member and Director of the Polaris Institute, was guest speaker
June
- June 11, the steering committee decided that issues for our next public meeting would be: the deregulation and privatization of electricity in Ontario; international trade and investment treaties; reinventing democracy; proportional representation; the Alternative Budget; Aboriginal Rights and Globalization; privatization and the public sector (UPS tribunal challenge); Dick Beck's water resolution
- June 18, at our second public meeting the following committees were formed:

- GATS and Trade – Herb Wiseman
- Reinventing Democracy – Roy Brady
- Privatization – Gordon Usher
- Water – Melanie Sangster
- Food – Desmond Carabine
August
- August 7 and 29, Steering Committee completed governance and committees and planned the third public meeting
September
- September 20, completed AGM business: chapter representation and two resolutions – Guest Speaker was Belinda Wilson from VOCO (Voices of Central Ontario, acting for the de-amalgamation of the forced amalgamation of 17 municipalities into the City of Kawartha Lakes)
October
- October 26-28, Roy Brady was official chapter representative at the AGM in Red Deer. – See “Citizens' Agenda: Framework for Change” on the national website
November
- November 5, Steering committee identified public health care as the chapter's highest priority
- November 10, CFWTO (Common Front on the World Trade Organization) Caravan arrived in Peterborough to present a message that “A Better World is Possible: Developing Common Security Through Fair Trade” at a public event
- November 12, Alan Borovoy, Chief Counsel for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, spoke on "What's wrong with Bill-36" (the pending anti-terrorist act)
